A little sensation at the Wittekind castle
In 1996, archaeologists discovered a monument of great historical and artistic importance at the Widukind (Wittekind) Castle. The site was discovered within the grounds of the pre-Roman fort structure. The structure contains the foundations and walls of a rare 10th century church whose ground plan follows the form of a cross. The well-preserved, unadorned stone blocks form a Greek cross embedded in the earth. The cross itself measures approximately 14 meters across. Five graves were unearthed inside the church, three of which belonged to children. A glass enclosure helps to protect the artifacts from the elements.
