Church City Minden

Der Mindener DomThe history of Minden's cathedral starts at the end of the 8th century with building a simple hall church without a tower on the cathedral hill. This establishment building was given up later and was replaced by a 3-aisle long-house with an east-transept and and a choire as well as probably an outside crypt.

During the 10th century a central western-transept was added which achieved its final shape in the 12th century. Before middle of the 13th century a late-romanesque choir ledge with richly moulded glassed-fronts has been built. The gothic hall with its famous tracery windows was attached to this. The building has been heavily damaged during the 2nd world war and has almost been completely restored in this form.

Eingang in den Mindener DomA replication of the golden panel, which provided the choir completion for almost 450 years, has been commissioned on the occasion of the 1200-year-celebration of the diocese and can be viewed since pentecost 2002.

Besides different christian descriptions inside the church the cathedral's treasury deserves your attention: Here the Minden Cross (1070), the Petri shrine (1071), the silver Madonna (1230) as well as a multiplicity of treasuries are kept. If viewing the cathedral and a tour through the churches shown below sparked your interest in more: The Simeonis church ,founded at the beginning of the 13th century, and the church of Benedictines who founded the St. Mauritius monastery in 1042 also have a strong historical relevance and are always werth a visit!
